How to Care for Your Roses and Make Them Last Longer

How to Care for Your Roses and Make Them Last Longer

Roses are one of the most beautiful and timeless flowers you can receive, roses come in so many different varieties and colours such as yellow roses, pink roses or vibrant orange rose bouquets. Whether they arrive as a romantic gesture, a birthday surprise, or simply to brighten your home, everyone wants their roses to stay fresh and vibrant for as long as possible.

With a few simple steps, you can extend the life of your bouquet and enjoy your roses for many days to come.

1. Trim the Stems Before Placing in Water

When your roses arrive, the first thing you should do is trim the stems.

Use sharp scissors or a knife and cut about 2–3 cm from the bottom of each stem at a slight angle. Cutting at an angle helps the flowers absorb water more easily and prevents the stems from sitting flat at the bottom of the vase.

For best results, trim the stems under running water.

2. Remove Leaves Below the Water Line

Leaves sitting in water can quickly cause bacteria to develop. This can shorten the life of your flowers.

Remove any leaves that would sit below the water line in your vase. This keeps the water clean and helps your roses stay fresh for longer.

3. Use a Clean Vase

Before placing your flowers in a vase, wash it thoroughly with warm soapy water.

A clean vase reduces bacteria in the water, which is one of the biggest reasons flowers fade quickly.

4. Add Fresh Water and Flower Food

Fill your vase with fresh, cool water and add the flower food provided with your bouquet. Here at The Blossomist we include flower food and flower care guide to advise the best days to feed your roses.

Flower food contains nutrients that keep roses healthy while also preventing bacteria from growing in the water.

If you don’t have flower food, you can refresh the water daily to keep it clean.

5. Change the Water Every Two Days

To keep your roses looking their best, change the water every two days.

Each time you change the water:

  • Rinse the vase
  • Refill with fresh water
  • Trim the stems slightly again

This helps the flowers absorb water more effectively.

6. Keep Roses Away From Heat and Sunlight

Roses prefer a cool environment.

Avoid placing them near:

  • radiators
  • direct sunlight
  • appliances that generate heat

Keeping flowers cool helps them last significantly longer.

7. Remove Wilting Petals

As your bouquet ages, some outer petals may begin to wilt.

Gently remove these petals so the flower continues to look fresh and beautiful.

With the right care, your roses will be filling your home with colour and fragrance.
